Found a pet with no tag?
They can still be reunited with their family. Here's the order we'd work through.
Check the whole collar
Turn the collar over and look at every tag, including a rabies or license tag — the number on one can be traced back to the clinic or county that issued it.
Have them scanned for a microchip
Vet clinics, animal shelters and animal control offices have universal scanners and will check a found pet for a chip. Call ahead and ask; most take walk-ins.
Post in local lost-pet groups
Neighborhood groups, your county shelter's found-pet page and local pet pages are where owners look first. Include a clear photo and the cross streets where you found them.
Keep them safe and contained
Leash them or keep them in a closed room away from your own pets, offer water and a small amount of food, and give them somewhere quiet to settle while you search.
If your pet goes missing
