Pet sitters and dog walkers in Greensboro

Greensboro takes its animal rules seriously in a way few cities do — this is the city whose abused puppy, Susie, inspired the state law that made malicious animal cruelty a felony in North Carolina, and Guilford County's shelter named its surgery ward after her. Day to day that shows up as an outright ban on unattended tethering, a $200 permit just to keep an unaltered pet, and a legal duty to report a found stray within 72 hours.

Where

Covering Greensboro and Guilford County

Providers list the parts of Greensboro they actually travel to, which is usually a handful of neighbourhoods rather than the whole city. Between them the app covers Fisher Park, College Hill, Lindley Park, Sunset Hills, Westerwood, Dunleath, Latham Park, Irving Park, Glenwood, Southside, Kirkwood and Starmount Forest, along with the rest of Guilford County. Search your own address in the app and it will show who is genuinely close rather than who is merely listed.

Being straight with you

Our Greensboro coverage right now

We are onboarding our first Greensboro providers, so coverage is filling in neighbourhood by neighbourhood rather than being complete everywhere. We would rather say that than show you a long list of names who cannot actually take your booking. Every provider verifies their ID with our team before they appear, and the app only shows people who are free for your dates.

If nobody is near you yet, it is worth checking back — Greensboro is our home market and the first one we are building out.

Local rules

Dog laws in Greensboro

The parts that catch people out, and where to check for yourself.

Greensboro adopted Guilford County's animal ordinance, and it has three provisions most cities don't. First, since 2014, tethering a dog unattended to any stationary object — tree, fence, post, dog house — is banned outright; only an attended leash or a cable-trolley within strict specs (10-foot cable, swivels, under a tenth of the dog's weight, nylon or leather collar, no puppies under a year) is legal. Second, since 2018, keeping a dog or cat over six months that isn't spayed or neutered requires a $200 unaltered-animal permit (Sec. 5-29/5-30), with exemptions for service dogs, health cases and licensed breeders. Third — and this one matters if you find a dog — Sec. 5-22 makes it unlawful to keep a found stray without notifying animal control within 72 hours. The basics still apply: leashed everywhere off your property inside the city (Sec. 5-9), off-leash only in the dog parks, rabies vaccination by four months and the tag worn at all times under state law. There is no general dog licence.

Out and about

Dog parks in Greensboro

All free, all fenced, and all leashed going in and out.

🐾

Hussey BarkPark (Country Park) — 3905 Nathanael Greene Drive

Greensboro's original off-leash park, and the clever one: about six acres split into three fenced lots that are rotated so the turf gets to recover — so check which lot is open when you arrive. Large- and small-breed areas, free, open from 8am to around sunset.

🐾

Griffin Dog Park (Lewis Griffin Recreation Center) — 5301 Hilltop Road

About two acres on the southwest side with double-gated entries, small and large sections, and dog water fountains.

🐾

Dog Park at LeBauer Park — 208 N Davie Street

The downtown pocket park inside LeBauer — small, shaded, with water bowls, and the natural stop for centre-city apartment dogs. Park hours 7am–10pm.

🐾

Dog Park at Southwest Park — 6309 SW Park Drive

A county-run two-and-a-half acres with agility equipment, water fountains and size-separated sections — technically Guilford County's park rather than the city's, and open 6am–8pm.

If the worst happens

Lost a pet in Greensboro?

Save these numbers now, not on the day.

980 Guilford College Road — the county's new shelter (opened 2023), serving Greensboro and High Point. This is where a found dog goes. For a loose-dog pickup, Animal Control is 336-641-5990.

3163 Hines Chapel Road — a separate nonprofit rescue for adoptions; strays go to the county shelter, not here.

Work through the first hour properly — our step-by-step plan covers what to do before you start making calls. A QR ID tag skips most of this: whoever finds your pet scans the code with their phone and reaches you directly, without a shelter or a scanner in between.

Being fair about it

Your other options in Greensboro

  • ✓Rover and Wag — larger networks than ours, so if you need someone tonight they will usually have somebody. Their commission on new sitters is around 20%.
  • ✓A boarding kennel — predictable and staffed overnight, but your dog is somewhere unfamiliar rather than at home.
  • ✓A neighbour — free and trusted, until the week they are away too.

What you get booking through Kingston’s

  • ✓Every provider's photo ID is checked by a person on our team before they can appear in search or take a booking — that is what the green Verified badge means
  • ✓Message a provider before you commit, and keep talking through the booking with photos. The conversation stays attached to the booking, so what was agreed stays on the record
  • ✓Star ratings and reviews can only be left by someone who actually completed a booking with that provider — nobody else can post one
  • ✓If something goes wrong, report it in the app and your payment is held while we review it
  • ✓Providers keep 87% of what they charge against Rover's roughly 80%, so the same work pays a local sitter more — better-paid sitters stay, and a sitter who already knows your dog beats a cheaper stranger

We are the newest of these options in Greensboro and have fewer providers than the national platforms — we would rather you knew that going in. How to judge any sitter for yourself applies whichever one you choose.

Questions

Greensboro pet care FAQ

Is it legal to tie my dog out in the yard in Greensboro?+

Not unattended — Guilford County banned tethering a dog to any stationary object while you're away back in 2014, one of the stricter rules in the state. The only legal setups are an attended leash or a cable-trolley system meeting the county specs: at least a 10-foot cable with swivels, tether under a tenth of the dog's body weight, nylon or leather collar, and never for a sick dog or a puppy under one year.

Do I need a licence for my dog in Greensboro?+

No general licence — but there's a rule that works like one: if your dog or cat over six months isn't spayed or neutered, Guilford County requires a $200 unaltered-animal permit with a display tag. Altered pets need nothing beyond the state-required rabies tag, which must be worn at all times.

I found a stray dog in Greensboro — can I just keep it while I look for the owner?+

You have to report it: Guilford County's Sec. 5-22 makes it unlawful to hold a found stray for more than 72 hours without notifying Animal Services (336-641-3400). Report it, post it in the Greensboro lost-pet groups, and if the dog has an ID tag or a scannable QR tag you may be able to skip the shelter entirely and call the owner directly.

What does a dog walker cost in Greensboro?+

Around $15–$22 for a 30-minute walk — Rover's Greensboro rate hovered near $18 in 2026, among the most affordable of the cities we cover. Boarding in a sitter's home runs $30–$46 a night (the mid-2026 median was $39), and overnight house sitting $35–$55.

What's the three-lot system at the BarkPark?+

Country Park's Hussey BarkPark splits its six acres into three fenced lots — A, B and C — and rotates which are open so the grass gets time to recover. It means the park you walk into changes week to week, and occasionally your favourite lot is resting. Free, open from 8am to about sunset, with large- and small-breed areas.

My dog got out in Greensboro — who do I call first?+

Guilford County Animal Control on 336-641-5990 for an officer, and the shelter at 980 Guilford College Road (336-641-3400) to file the lost report — that's the new 2023 building, not the old Wendover Avenue address that still floats around online. Post in the Greensboro lost-pet Facebook groups at the same time; and remember any finder is legally required to report your dog within 72 hours, so reports do come in.

Do you have providers in my part of Greensboro?+

We're building Greensboro out from the walkable historic districts first — Fisher Park, College Hill, Lindley Park, Sunset Hills. Open the app and search your address to see who's actually available near you; if your area is still thin, check back soon.

How is Kingston's different from Rover in Greensboro?+

Providers keep 87% of what they charge, against roughly 80% for new sitters on Rover — and in a market where a walk runs $18, those few dollars per booking are what keep good sitters doing this at all. Booking is free for pet owners either way.
